Jigokudani is a home of the world-famous "snow monkeys". 200 or so Japanese Macaque monkeys inhabit the area and despite the harsh conditions (snow-covered for one-third of the year) and the rough cliffs and hot springs bursting from the ground, the area is paradise for the monkeys. The reason is that hot spring water collects in pools that the monkeys enjoy bathing in. This provides an opportunity for us humans to watch the Macaque up close and observe their fascinating behavior.

Wasabi can only be grown in the purest, cleanest water, and Azumino is blessed with sparkling clean spring water fed by snowmelt from the Japanese Alps. The Daio Wasabi Farm takes advantage of this natural bounty and grows some of the highest quality Japanese horseradishes. The farm itself is a pleasure to stroll through and offers many wasabi-related creations including wasabi flavored soft serve ice cream.
